Use emerita or emeritus to refer to individuals who retain their rank or title when they retire. Emerita refers to the rank or title of a female, and emeritus refers to the rank or title of a male. Capitalize if proceeding the name, lowercase after the name and formal title. Example: Professor Emerita Jane Smith. John Doe, associate professor emeritus of journalism.
