Use Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to refer to the office in the Division of Student Affairs that oversees the community of fraternities and sororities at the University of Missouri. FSL is acceptable on second reference of the office. Use fraternity and sorority community or fraternity and sorority chapters when referring to the community of students. Do not refer to fraternities and sororities as “Greek Life.”
Mizzou’s fraternity and sorority system was established in 1869.
The fraternity/sorority community is comprised of four councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Panhellenic Association (PHA). When listing together, default to alphabetical order.
Do not refer to chapters as “houses.” Many students do not live in their chapters’ houses, and several chapters do not have houses.
Do not use the word “Greek” to refer to fraternities and sororities or the fraternity/sorority community except in proper nouns (e.g., Greektown, Greek Week).
