Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL)

Fraternity and Sorority Life is acceptable on first reference. FSL is acceptable on second reference. Do not refer to FSL as “Greek Life.”

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in the Division of Student Affairs oversees the community of fraternities and sororities at the University of Missouri. Mizzou’s fraternity and sorority system was established in 1869.

The fraternity/sorority community is comprised of four councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Panhellenic Association (PHA).

Do not refer to chapters as “houses.” Many students do not live in their chapters’ houses, and several chapters do not have houses.

Do not use the word “Greek” to refer to fraternities and sororities or the fraternity/sorority community except in proper nouns (e.g., Greektown, Greek Week, Multicultural Greek Council).
