Use Freshman Interest Group(s) on first reference. FIG or FIGs is acceptable on second reference. 

Mizzou offers these learning communities for freshmen. Students with similar interests (academic, thematic) live together, enroll in the same classes and participate in special activities. 

Example: She joined the art history Freshman Interest Group. The FIG meets at 2 p.m. on Thursdays.
